You have flip-flops. You have baseball gloves. Both pretty seasonal on their own. You put them together, and it’s the Spring-iest footwear made for mankind. And it was Dallas flip-flop purveyor Hari Mari that came up with the concept.
For their new sandal, the Hari Mari team worked with Nokona, a factory that’s been handcrafting gloves since 1934 in the small town of Nocona, a hundred miles northwest of Dallas (Nolan Ryan’s mitt maker of choice). Hari Mari took Nokona’s top grain leather and created a flip flop that, in my opinion, looks studdlier than your average sandal.
I thought the collaboration was cool enough that I added a mention of it in Caitlin Clark’s man-shop roundup in our April issue, and now here’s where I need to make a clarification. In that spread, we said that the Nokona flip flops were available at Saint Bernard, however, they are, in fact, not. Some Hari Mari styles are available at the sporting goods retailer, but these particular flip flops are only available in the following places: 1. Hari Mari’s online shop (obvi) and 2. Huckberry, an online catalog that curates well-made man things such as the 10-Year Hoodie and rucksacks made by the same manufacturer that supplies bags for Navy SEALS (in other words, getting on Huckberry’s site is a big stamp of cool-dude approval). Circling back around: I regret my error.
Since I’m on the subject of regrets, I’ll go ahead and add that Hari Mari sent editor Tim Rogers a pair of the new flip flops (his report: super comfortable) and, in his glee, he shed his clunky dad sneakers, forgetting that his daughter had recently given him a schmear of magenta polish on his Flinstone-like toes. I regret seeing my boss’s unfortunate pedicure (no offense, Stella).
And while flip flops will always be the greatest source of fashion contention in the D Magazine offices as long as Zac Crain works here, I think we can all agree that Hari Mari’s new sponsor, Texas Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels, looks pretty darn good in them.
