As part of its Commercial Real Estate Awards program, D CEO will present Harwood International’s Gabriel Barbier-Mueller with its Pioneer Award for 2020.
Over the course of his career, Barbier-Mueller has changed the landscape of a part of Uptown once known as Little Mexico into a 19-city-block, masterplanned district of high-rise and midrise office buildings, residential towers, boutiques, restaurants, an expansive samurai collection, and gardens inspired by his world travels.
And he is far from finished.
Fresh from a trip to India, Barbier-Mueller mulls over a question where we ask the Swiss-born developer if he considers himself a pioneer among Dallas’ long-line of real estate families. “I pushed the envelope,” he says, looking out from his office at the twisted architecture of the recently built Rolex Building. “I will leave Dallas having left some footprint.”
Barbier-Mueller has been instrumental in shaping the live-work-play concept in Dallas. And has rallied behind issues of connectivity–often at his own expense when it came to neighbors wanting to develop properties without putting in sidewalks.
Next year, the developer–and his children–will work on some of their biggest projects yet: doubling its restaurant offerings, opening a hotel described as an urban oasis, and Uptown’s tallest building. Read more about him and his development legacy in these D CEO profiles from 2006 and 2015.
