Don’t be afraid to mix metals.

Hardware doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy. Play with tones and finishes for a modern look.

Get it:

Terrazzo is back!

Granite and marble have both had their day, but nowterrazzo is having a moment—again. “Terrazzo was initially created by Venetian construction workers as a low-cost flooring material,” says Waterworks co-founder Barbara Sallick. “Terrazzo’s first revival was in the ’20s and ’30s and was common in warm climates—its appearance is clean and crisp.”

See the beautiful terrazzo floors that were uncovered in Highland Park Village’s Royal Blue Grocery. Get the look at Waterworks and Ann Sacks.

Go big in small spaces!

Maybe you don’t want to commit to a bold wallpaper in a living room or a vibrant color in the kitchen, but a smaller space is the perfect spot to get creative. Take April Graves’ bathroom, for instance. The Aria Stone Gallery vice president worked with Botond Laszlo of Marvelous Home Makeovers to transform the room with black-and-white Brazilian Dalmata marble. To complement the rare stone’s Rorschach-esque design, Graves “focused on integrating clean lines, a simple color palette, and minimal accessories,” such as the brushed gold showerheads from Kohler.

Make the mantel the focus.

So often the mantel is an afterthought. Or—gasp!—the landing spot for a television. But that doesn’t mean it has to be overdone, either. Interior designer Carrie Hatfield recommends a wall sculpture, great piece of art, or beautiful mirror for decorating a well-edited mantel. “Keep things simple; don’t overdo it,” she says. “I have a mirror above one and art above the other.”
